Sorry, but I've gotta preach a little this morning. Many Christians are looking toward the November 2012 elections in hopes that a conservative president is put in office who can "fix" things. Is that what the first century Christians did with the Roman government? "Oh I sure hope we get a conservative Caesar so life will be good again." No, they were a light to a very dark world. The same Christians who are waiting on the election do not realize they are wasting 11 precious months when they could be "fixing" the problem themselves. How's that you ask?
1. We can take back our children and their minds. Want to affect this nation for good? Start at home and instill godly principles in your children. Having just reviewed some of the latest public school curriculum I assure you parents need to wake up and look at what is contained in their children's textbooks. Teach them what is really an abomination to God. You might be surprised at just how brainwashed your child is with concepts like tolerance and diversity. Also, teach them the godly principle of work! We need to be reminded in this country that God expects men to work--not stand around waiting on handouts.
2. We can tell Hollywood enough is enough. By turning off the television and boycotting immoral movies Christians can, in essence, speak Hollywood's language. A language they might not like, but one they fully understand. And that is the language of money. Don't go complaining about how bad things are while you or your children are plugged into Glee or the Kardashians.
3. We can take our schools back. We can stop signing permission slips allowing ungodly homosexual speakers to come in and influence our kids. We can refuse to allow our elementary students to be taught sex ed, and instead preserve their innocence. We can run for the school board. We can get on the textbook committee. We can offer to help in the classroom.
4. We can set a real Christian example in the office/school. When bad language or unethical behavior is practiced, we can let people know that it is wrong and we won't just turn a blind eye (or ear). Our society has forgotten that there really is an absolute standard for right and wrong.
5. We can spread the truth in love regarding sin. Pulpits have grown cold over the reality of sin, and many of our neighbors are "comfortable" in their sinful lifestyle. We can make them uncomfortable in an effort to save their souls.
6. We can teach our friends and our neighbors the truth about when life begins. We can mail our articles to our community to try to curb abortion in our nation. Obviously, this one starts at home as well, but we can take out ads, write editorials, and remind the country that murder is wrong.
7. We can teach Bible classes on homosexuality so that church members know that it is still an abomination to God. We can hold weekend seminars free to the community that teaches the truth in a kind but yet truthful way.
8. We can join hands with other faithful congregations to try and get the truth about mankind's origins in our community.
9. We can tell our friends about the beautiful gift of Jesus Christ on Calvary.
10. We can use our local congregations for much more than just internal edification--we can actually use it as a foundation for community outreach.
In other words, we can do what we should be doing in the first place--be a light on a hill. If we really are the salt, then let's show the world.

During football games the team comes together and huddles up to call the play. How would it feel if the team called the play and then went and sat on the bench? Well, every Sunday we come together and call the play...and then we go back and sit on the bench. It's time to execute the play and score.

Christians, stop waiting on 2012 election to fix the problem. God never said let the government fix everything. He expects Christians to influence the world whether it is an election year or not. Please get busy.

The word Christian appears three times in the New Testament (Acts 11:26; Acts 26:28; I Peter 4:16). The disciples (followers of Christ) who were called Christians in Acts 11:26 had believed the gospel, turned unto the Lord, and had been added to the Lord (Acts 11:21, 24). The Church is the family of God and those meeting the conditions of faith, repentance, and water baptism were said to be added to the Lord, or Church (Acts 2:47; Acts 5:14; and I Timothy 3:15). Christians with "purpose of heart ... continue with the Lord" and show the "grace of God in their lives" (Acts 11:23). Those who want to wear the name Christian and fail to meet these conditions are pretenders.

Those called Christians in I Peter 4:16 were souls who had met the Bible conditions that entitled them to that name. They were souls "purified ... in obeying the truth", and "born again ... by the word of God" (1 Peter 1:22, 23). The Lord saved them when they were baptized in water (1 Peter 3:21). They were the "spiritual house"; the people of God", who worshipped God according to the testament governing God's present priesthood of believers (1 Peter 2:5, 9, 10). They were trying their best to live holy lives; to resist the lust of the flesh, and to endure faithfully under severe persecution (I Peter 4:1-18). So living, they could "commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator" (I Peter 4:19). Bible Christians (those with the above characteristics) have a "living hope", "an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled, and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you" (I Peter 1:3, 4). But those who are guilty of bringing shame and dishonor in the use of the name Christian will not be spared the punishment of God who gave the name to grace those born into His family (II Peter 2:9).

King Agrippa recognized Paul to be a Christian (Acts 26:28). The name was given by God in fulfillment to prophecy to those born into his spiritual family, the Church (Isaiah 62:2; Isaiah 56:5; Acts 11:26; I Timothy 3:15). The name Christian was used to identify the followers of Christ so much so that Agrippa knew who was entitled to wear the name. When Paul said, "I would to God that not only you, but also all who would hear me today, might become both almost and altogether such as I am" (Acts 26:29). He knew and they knew, that certain gospel conditions had to be obeyed for them to be called Christians. Paul tells the conditions he met to be entitled to this God given name in Acts 22:16. Paul knew, and Agrippa knew, that just being religious was not enough to be entitled Christian (Acts 26:5). The final condition of the gospel Paul met to be saved (Acts 2:38, 47; I Timothy 3:15). To be baptized into Christ is to be baptized into His body, the Church (Romans 6:3; I Corinthians 12:13). Paul knew, and Agrippa knew, (AND EVERYONE TODAY SHOULD KNOW), THAT ALL WHO ARE UNWILLING TO MEET THE CONDITIONS OF THE GOSPEL ARE NOT ENTITLED TO WEAR THE NAME CHRISTIAN. HAVE YOU MET THE CONDITIONS?

Many passages were cited, including II Corinthians 6:17, "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord... "Today, there is an element, even in the Church, that is saying, "We ought not to be different. We ought to mingle with people as they are, and not be a 'stand out' in our appearance or actions." I believe this is totally false, and exactly opposite to all the Bible teaches. Consider the following:

1. Our Language. While the world takes the name of the Lord in vain, tells dirty and suggestive stories, and gossips and maligns, the Christian is to shun all this and use the tongue to glorify God and edify people. (Mathew 12:36, 37; Romans 1:29, 30; 1 Timothy 4:12)

2. Where We Go. While the world is at a place of drinking, dancing, gambling, or elicit activities, the Christian is concerned about good morals and a good example. 1 Thessalonians 5:22, "Abstain from all appearance of evil"

3. How We Dress. While the world sees how little it can wear, the Christian is concerned about modesty at all times, and is aware of the Bible's emphasis upon lust and the shame of nakedness. (1 Timothy 2:9, 10, Revelation 3:18).

4. Our View of the Sanctity of Life. While the world seeks abortions, in many instances to hide their sins, the Christian stands against murder and for natural affection, and the sacredness of life. (II Timothy 3:1-5; I Corinthians 6:19, 20; Romans 13:9)

5. Our thinking. While the world is filling its mind with trash, lust, adultery, fornication, uncleanness, the Christian is trying to think on that which is honorable, clean, and pure. Philippians 4:8, "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

While the world regards self as the most important, and that which is to be satisfied, the Christian is trying to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. Mathew 6:33, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

7. Our Homes. While the world is attacking the home and bringing every imaginable pressure upon it to tear it down, Christians look upon it as a divine institution and a part of God's plan to meet the needs of man for his happiness. (Mathew 19:1-19; Ephesians 5:23-28)

8. Our Benevolence. While others only think of self, Christians are concerned about the needs of others. James 1:27, "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."

Those Christians who teach that we ought to just fall in with the crowd (just so we do not appear different) betray their depth of spirituality and faith. There is not enough faith yet to keep them from being ashamed of this Christian life that calls for all who follow the Lord to be different.
