HAS THIS EVER HAPPENED TO YOU?
You went through an entire song service without even thinking about what you were singing? You bowed your head and closed your eyes during the prayer but you really didn't become involved in it? You were more interested in when the preacher could finish the sermon than in what he was saying during the sermon? You allowed some minor noise near you to completely upset you so that you could not really worship? Why do these things happen? And what...Continue reading "HAS THIS EVER HAPPENED TO YOU?"
ARTICLES ON WORSHIP
WORSHIP INSIDE OUT Do religious rituals seem cold? Do sacred ceremonies seem meaningless? Is worship impersonal, merely an exercise in demanded duty? Do worship periods make you feel as if you are an audience watching a professional performance? If you answered "yes" to any of above, then read on. The Bible teaches that worship is a spiritual fellowship with God. It is not emotional excitement, magic rituals, or holy words, but submission of our will to the will of God....Continue reading "ARTICLES ON WORSHIP"
SOME THOUGHTS ON NEW SONGS!
Recently I had a discussion with a member of the church concerning the singing of some of the new songs that we have been singing. This person made the point that we cannot “teach and admonish one another if we don’t know how the song is sung, because we spend more time trying to learn how to sing the song, rather than listening to the words. This person felt that maybe we need to be singing some of the newer...Continue reading "SOME THOUGHTS ON NEW SONGS!"
WHAT ABOUT SUNDAY EVENINGS AND WEDNESDAYS?
Last week we looked honestly and forthrightly at the concept of Sunday evening services (and, by implication, Wednesday evening). We have seen that many in the Lord’s church have the concept that Sunday evening services are not as important as Sunday morning, and “vote with their presence (or lack of it) about its importance. We are more laid back and casual on Sunday evenings. We also considered the fact that our failure to attend may be a statement about our...Continue reading "WHAT ABOUT SUNDAY EVENINGS AND WEDNESDAYS?"
WHAT ABOUT SUNDAY EVENINGS AND WEDNESDAYS?
This last week I have heard of a congregation of the Lord’s church that is contemplating doing away with Sunday evening services. The reason is because of higher gas prices, and the reality of many of the members of the church having to drive long distances to come to church services. So, in an effort to aid brethren in saving gas, the church is thinking about having a morning service, eating a meal each Sunday, and then meeting again in...Continue reading "WHAT ABOUT SUNDAY EVENINGS AND WEDNESDAYS?"
ABC’S OF A GOOD GOSPEL MEETING
Many of you have already been working and supporting our upcoming gospel meeting with Glenn Colley. I personally do not buy into the idea that the day of the gospel meeting is over – ANYTIME the gospel is preached it will do the work God intended for it to do. The difficulty lies in us – will we be committed to seeing the gospel preached? Will we support it with our time, and prayers? Will we invite our friends and...Continue reading "ABC’S OF A GOOD GOSPEL MEETING"
Worship (Part 2)
Last week in this space we discussed the fact that our worship needs to be done well. We are in the presence of the Almighty God of the universe—the one who holds our very breath in his hands (Daniel 5:23). He deserves the very best we have to offer. He deserves our honor, our submission and our prostration before His throne because we are sinners begging for His mercy. He is the God who has provided a way of...Continue reading "Worship (Part 2)"
Worship
As of late, we here at South Cobb have been trying to help and aid our worship to God by changing a few things. For example, we have placed the announcements at the beginning of the service in the hopes that if we all know who is sick, then we will pray for them during times of prayer. We have had a class to encourage all of our men to get actively involved in the worship of the church,...Continue reading "Worship"
Practicing What We Sing
We don’t like hypocrites. We talk about them, use the name to label them, and try to stay as far away from them as we can. If you want to start a fight, call someone a hypocrite. The Greek term from which we get hypocrite is “hupokrites,” which means “one who answers.” It then became to be associated with dialogue on a stage (remember, the Ancient Greeks were the ones who gave us theatre and the performance of plays)....Continue reading "Practicing What We Sing"
The Lord's Supper
It continues to amaze me. The longer I study the Word of God, the more I learn. One brother has written that we need to study the unknown verses; we need to study even harder the verses that we think we know. In preparation for the lesson on the Lord’s Supper this morning, I looked at Matthew 26:26-29 — a passage that many of us can probably quote having heard it so often. What are some lessons we can learn...Continue reading "The Lord's Supper"
