WHY DO WE STILL HAVE A MOTHERS DAY?

Today is "Mother's Day," a day when cards and flowers are given to the women in our lives. Some will be taken out to eat and thoughts of gratitude expressed. Anna Jarvis in 1912 trademarked the phrases "Second Sunday in May" and "Mother's Day." President Woodrow Wilson and Congress made Mother's Day an official holiday. Growing up I remember us making cards for our mothers and/or purchasing little flowers in Styrofoam cups for them. I can't help but wonder why...

GOD'S BAILOUT PLAN

Much has been said and written about the efforts of the Federal government to bolster the floundering economy and put people back to work. Every day we hear of more doom and gloom as more people lose their jobs, as people cannot find jobs, and as Americans are going broke. We dare not minimize any suffering that has taken place as a result of all this, as even many of our members are struggling now due to lost jobs and...

SOME MORAL THOUGHTS BEFORE THE ELECTION.

ABORTION IS A SIN Ps 139:13-16 For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written,...

HALLOWEEN

“Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain. The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture, and is sometimes regarded as the "Celtic New Year". Traditionally, the festival was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and slaughter livestock for winter stores. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, now known as Halloween, the boundary between the alive and the deceased...

NEBUCHADNEZZAR’S HARD LESSON

Daniel 4:17 'This decision is by the decree of the watchers, And the sentence by the word of the holy ones, In order that the living may know That the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, Gives it to whomever He will, And sets over it the lowest of men.' NKJV Nebuchadnezzar was the greatest king over the greatest kingdom of the world in his day. All kingdoms that came after Babylon were inferior in many ways, and...

THE STABILITY OF YOUR TIMES

Isaiah 33:5-6 The LORD is exalted, for He dwells on high; He has filled Zion with justice and righteousness. Wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times, And the strength of salvation; The fear of the LORD is His treasure. NKJV We are going through some difficult times here in America. The economy is slowing down and discussions by those who “know it all are centered on a recession. Some of our number here at South Cobb has...

I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS

It is of great comfort to all of God’s people to know that God is with his people. Lately, with the stressful situations that seem to have hit this congregation hard, it is important to remember that we are not alone, but God is with us! Nothing can be of greater comfort now than that! To the families of FRANK LINDSEY, JEAN DAVIS, JOE SHINHOLSTER and EDWARD KELLY, know that our prayers are with you! Let us, as a family,...

An Open Letter from Nadab & Abihu

An open letter to the congregation of Israel from your humble servants and priests, Nadab and Abihu Brethren: It is with the utmost humility that we inform you of a change of worship practices. Be assured that we bring about this change only after much prayer and study. We have recently concluded an in-depth study of the Law, and have decided to bring about a change in the type of fire used in worship. We are aware that there is...

PRAY FOR RAIN

Traveling around Atlanta recently I came across a sign on a marquee at a church building encouraging us to pray for rain. Then, watching the nightly news on a local newscast, the anchors were talking about someone calling in and talking about the need to “pray for rain. Due to the drought we are in, we have heard many calls to pray for rain, and the jokes are coming fast and furious. We are in a drought because “preachers are...

OUR HEROES ??

The news broke Wednesday concerning Michael Vick and the federal indictment with regards to dog fighting in Virginia. Without making any reference to his guilt or innocence (I cannot do that, as I have no way of knowing if he is guilty or not), there are some lessons that leap out to all of us as we hear, and will continue to hear, all of the allegations, the comments and the hype regarding Mr. Vick. First, as the news broke,...

QUIT LYING TO ME!

John 8:44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. NKJV I’m sick and tired of a world where lying is the norm! Why can’t people simply tell the...

The Slippery Slope

In January 1973, the United States Supreme Court upheld a woman’s right to terminate her pregnancy, thus allowing abortion on demand. Since then, it has been estimated that over 45,000,000 abortions have taken place in this country, and the sanctity of human life has been attacked. Rather than allowing God to have his say about the sanctity of life, man has decided to determine who deserves to live and who does not. One would think that this might be the...

Catching Up

Sometimes I use the bulletin article to catch all of us up on some things that are happening around South Cobb and ways you can get involved. Here are some things that you need to be aware of and ways you can help. 1. FLOOD RELIEF — our flood relief efforts from July are winding down, and we are slowly getting things back to normal. We still have a few beds that we are holding for some of the flood...

God is in Control

The untold human heartache and tragedy of this last week due to the Hurricane Katrina breaks our hearts. Those of us who helped out in the flood relief, in seeing the devastation that affected those around us, know in some small way how these people must feel and what they must be going through. We need to be on our knees daily praying to our Heavenly Father for them and then acting and working for those we can help, both...

Thank You!

I thank everyone at South Cobb who rose to the occasion last week as we unloaded a truck of goods for the victims of the floods. Your spirit of cooperation was tremendous and something for which I am very proud. It is my fervent prayer that God continue to bless each of you in every way, and that we keep this attitude of service all year long. This has been a sobering experience for me, going into the homes...

News and Controversy

The following is an excerpt from a February 1 article from “The Tennessean.”: [Rubel] Shelly announced this week that he will leave his position at [The Family of God Church at Woodmont Hills] in August to teach college students how to create similar social service ministries, serving as a professor in a new graduate program in urban ministries offered at Rochester College, a Christian school in Rochester Hills, Mich. He said he will continue to be involved in several Family...

New Deacons Announced

FROM THE SHEPHERDS It was with a great deal of joy that we announced six new deacons last Sunday. We are proud to have Don Cook, Eric Johnson, Frank Lindsey, Jon Stroud, Rob Stroud and Kyle Walker become deacons here at South Cobb. They join Clyde Carson, Al Gattis, Doug Pirtle and Larry Stubblefield. We have needed more deacons for a long time, and we are pleased with the work these men have been doing over past few years. I...

Interesting, Isn't It?

Since September 11, 2001, interest in Islam and the Muslim world has heightened due to the terror attacks on American interests at home and abroad. As we have been studying the religion of Islam on Wednesday evenings, we have noted that Islam has grown and conquered the world, not by intellectual reasoning, but by the sword. The movement from its earliest days until now has been known by violence, war and brutality. In the news recently, is the attack by...
