Seeing the Unseen

Scientists have constructed two “sight helpers.” The microscope aids in seeing microbial life and atoms. The telescope helps in seeing stars and galaxies so far away. We humans apparently have the need to see “things invisible to the naked eye.” My friend, Doug Finney, gave me his personal telescope, and since then I have been fascinated with previously invisible worlds that are in plain view.

The Bible is a “spiritual telescope” which helps in seeing eternal realities. Through its “Jesus-lens” we can view angels, heavenly hosts, and even the spiritual enemies that threaten human life:
There was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against
the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he
was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The
great dragon was hurled down — that ancient serpent called the
devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled
to the earth, and his angels with him (Revelation 12:7-9 NIV).

The best things in life are invisible! In fact, the most valuable things we possess can only be seen by faith. We can’t see heaven, we cannot behold Jesus’ precious face, and we cannot even see the Cross on which he died. When we watch a loved one die, we cannot observe the departure of the spirit from the body. We cannot even see our own souls. But we believe in each of these, and each is of more value than any golden or silver thing we admire or hold.

In spring, I enjoy watching trees moving by the power of strong wind. I like it when someone fans me on a hot, muggy afternoon. What is wind? We cannot see it, yet we know how very powerful it is! We make our daily plans according to the severity forecast of unseen wind. So it is with God. Did you know, “wind” is the word “spirit” in Greek? God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth (John 4:24 NIV). Today, make your plans according to what you cannot see! Believe in what is invisible to your eye. There are permanent and eternal storms coming!
