JESUS' BUSY LIFE

Life is so hectic. We are so busy in our lives, and this time of year is usually the busiest as we make plans and have family get togethers. There is so much to do, so many places to go, so many things to see about.
What is sad is that we often use our “busyness” for our failure to do what we know we should do. And, in an effort to excuse ourselves we claim that we are busier than anyone else.
Jesus was a busy man as well. Note the following passages:

Luke 2:49 And He said to them, "Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father's business? NKJV

John 9:4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. KJV

John 4:34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. KJV

John 17:4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. KJV

John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. KJV

But despite his “busyness” Jesus always found time to do some things. He took the time to do the following things, and we, too, need to do the same (especially if we are trying to be like Jesus).

JESUS TOOK TIME TO PRAY! It is Luke who tells us about the prayer life of Jesus. In Luke 6:12 the Bible says that Jesus spent all night in prayer to God. In Luke 9:28 Jesus took Peter, James and John up on a mountain to pray. In Luke 10:28, 11:1-2 and 18:1 Jesus continually encourages his disciples to pray, and in the Garden of Gethsemane, as he is about to be taken, he is praying and encouraging Peter, James and John to pray and watch.
A man was quoted as saying, “I have so much to do today that I shall never get it done unless I spend at least two hours in prayer.” If you are to busy to pray, then you are busier than you ought to be.

JESUS WAS NEVER TO BUSY TO OBSERVE GOD’S HANDIWORK IN NATURE.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus referred to the lilies of the field, and the birds of the air (Matthew 6:26-29). He spent much time on mountains in prayer, and before beginning his ministry he spent 40 days and nights in the wilderness. Truly, Jesus understood that “the heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows his handiwork.” (Psalms 19:1).

In our “busyness” it is great to consider how God continues to sustain and “uphold all things by the word of His power” (Hebrews 1:3), and to know that if God can handle that, He can handle anything that I have a problem with.

JESUS WAS NOT TO BUSY TO ATTEND SOCIAL EVENTS. In John 2:1-11 Jesus was invited to and went to a wedding in Galilee. We do not know the bride nor the groom, but we do know that Jesus went to their wedding and helped them when they needed some help. It would have been a “social faux paus” for them to no longer have wine. Jesus was concerned about their social standing.

Jesus was a man who was well rounded. He “increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” (Luke 2:52). We must strive to be like him, and be well rounded in every way.

More next week!
