One of My Favorite Stories
Then they said to him again, "What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?"
He answered them, "I told you already, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?"
Then they reviled him and said, "You are His disciple, but we are Moses' disciples. We know that God spoke to Moses; as for this fellow, we do not know where He is from."
The man answered and said to them,” Why, this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has opened my eyes! Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him. Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind. If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing."
They answered and said to him, "You were completely born in sins, and are you teaching us?" And they cast him out. (John 9:26-34, NKJV)
The account we read above deals with the blind man healed by Jesus and how he answered the Pharisees concerning what had happened. The man knew at this point that it was Jesus that had healed him, and he considered him to be a prophet (John 9:17). In discussing this with the Pharisees, they accused Jesus of being a sinner, but the blind man, using simple and concise logic, came to truth and knew that Jesus was from God.
I love this story for two simple reasons.
First, it shows that simply thinking about what happened, and simply telling the story, proves beyond any doubt that Jesus is who He claimed to be. The blind man considered his situation before he was healed and then afterward. Through the simple use of reasoning, he came to believe that Jesus is who He claimed to be. And he makes a convincing and persuasive argument to the Pharisees who continued to close their minds to the truth. This was “un-get-aroundable.” One has to admit to the truth of what they saw.
Secondly, this shows the fact that some, even faced with a simple argument teaching a simple truth, will reject the truth to hold on to what they think, no matter what. Some people will not accept truth, even when it confronts them squarely. Are we to be upset and annoyed with them, or do we continue to chalk it up to the blinding power of Satan’s lies?
Satan has done a magnificent job in convincing the world of his lies and will continue to do so until the Lord declares this world to be no more. We have the simple truth to offer, and we need to make it as simple as the blind man did to the Pharisees. Whether the world accepts it or not is entirely up to them.
Now, letting the story hit closer to home, what do we believe about Jesus? Do we believe in Jesus enough to obey His commands and become a Christian? Do we believe enough to be faithful to Him, no matter what comes?
Let the world take the best shot—child of God, we have the truth! Believe it!
